Kudos to Austin Police Department

I was assaulted and robbed on Saturday 7/21/12 in broad daylight at about 5:30pm. Here is my story. Karen ( my wife ), Debbie ( wife’s friend ) and I had just finished a meal at Gueros Taco Bar on South Congress Avenue. After the meal we all proceeded south on the west side of congress visiting various shops. I told Karen that I was going to walk down the street to get a cup of coffee. I was just about to enter Cafe Italiano when I received a phone call. I answered the phone and turned facing north towards the capital. The next thing I know is someone hits me in the side of my face holding my phone and grabs my iPhone. I was momentarily startled. I saw a young black man running away with my phone in his hand. I followed him around the corner as he headed west on Milton and realized there was no way I could catch him since I had sandals on. The assailant was with three other men ( two black and one hispanic ). There was also a man walking east on Milton with a small child who was talking on his phone. I asked him to call 911. I was amazed that the Austin police arrived in about 2 minutes. The police then swarmed the area looking for the assailants. They also dispatched a helicopter. They quickly caught three of them and had the last one blocked into a particular area. They next called in K-9 and they got the last one of them. I next had to ID them and go to the police station to fill out a report and meet with a detective.

The police recovered my iPhone.

My face is swollen and sore where I was hit but other than being shook up – I am fine.

I was amazed at how well the Austin police worked as a team to catch the bad guys! They were very courteous and treated me very well. I would like to commend the following police offices for an outstanding job:
Air-2 (helicopter)

K. Perrydoe badge 7228

Fourth of July Party Recap

From Maria Shelby:

The 4th of July signifies a lot of things, most importantly, independence for the USA. It is also means that there is a great celebration to look forward to. This year was no different as we had another successful pool party on this historical day.

The event games, targeted at entertaining children, were filled with watermelon relay races, coin dives, pie eating contests and badminton games. There were plenty of food and snacks for everyone. We also had raffle giveaways for the adults (one per family).

A big thank you to all the people who helped make the day a memorable one for our kids including our sponsors and volunteers and our HOA Board Members for supporting the annual community event. Those volunteers include Alan Shelby, our emcee, Marina Butts, Deborah & Nate Southerland, Tracy Johnson, the children who helped with the raffle drawings, Dan Frasier (our hot dog chef) and many others who helped with either setting up, assisted with running contests or closed shop that afternoon. It takes a group effort to make it right. Our neighborhood is blessed to have such a nice pool facility and friendly people to help make the party an enjoyable event for everyone.

We were also fortunate to have such great sponsors who donated items from their businesses to give away as raffles! In all, we had over 14 drawings and neighborhood winners. In addition, the kids won prizes for winning contests or finding certain coins in the nickel dives.

Please shop at our sponsors’ businesses because they continue to support our events and we wish them continued success. The sponsors and their donations include:

Frost Bank (Tech Ridge) – seven cases of water, two gift baskets
Which Wich (Parmer Lane) – three dinners for two coupons, t-shirt & Which Wich cup, multiple buy one get one free coupons
My Fit Foods (Tech Ridge) – $25 gift card, multiple buy one get one free coupons
Jenny Walker Realtor – two $50 McCormick & Schmick gift cards
Mattrezz Guys (Burnet Rd) – two jumbo memory foam pillows and mattress cover
Kevin Koym (Tech Ranch) – 1 seat to Tech5Venture program
Tracy Johnson (Thirtyone Consultant in SF) – one specialty bag with gifts
Fletch Realty Pflugerville (Brad Butts in SF) – three Starbucks gift cards
SFROA – Einstein Bros gift cards and two sets of four tickets to a Friday night Round Rock Express game with fireworks

Also, here’s a special message from the Yard of the Month Committee:

The judging is done on the first weekend of each month, and the judging is getting really tough!  There are a lot of beautiful yards, and our neighbors are showing a lot of originality and hard work.  We on the Yard of the Month Committee — Ronda Schultz, Leigh Ann Brunson, and Jacob Abdel-Qader, really appreciate nominations from our neighbors!  Please send an email to Ronda at [email protected], Leigh Ann at [email protected], or Jacob at [email protected].

2012 4th of July Party at Scofield Farms Pool

From Maria Shelby:

The annual 4th of July pool party will be held on Wednesday, July 4th from 10:30 am to 2 pm.  We will have a multitude of games for the children and door prizes for the parents.  Unfortunately, AFD officials informed me that their fire trucks will not be able available to lead us in a neighborhood parade prior to the event.  However, we will have plenty to do without their presence including water volleyball, watermelon relay races, pie-eating contests, badminton in the grassy area, and the ever popular coin toss in the pool.

In addition, there will be door prizes from Frost Bank, Which Wich, My Fit Foods, tickets to watch the Round Rock Express baseball games, and others to be announced at the event.  In addition, we will have a tattoo parlor.

The food this year includes grilled hot dogs, chips, watermelon, flavored ice pops, and some type of sweets for dessert.  This is one of the biggest events of the year and we are excited for it to take place!  The weather forecast for next Wednesday is hot and sunny!

Bring your American spirit, family and the kids’ goggles so they can see those coins underwater.  Lastly, bring some folding chairs as we might run out!

New Playground

After many months of planning and work, the new playscape by the pool is open for play as of today (Tuesday, June 19). We anticipate that the children of Scofield Farms will enjoy this fun, safe, and shaded place to play for many years to come!  In the near future, we will extend the perimeter fencing to encircle the entire area and add a gate at the northeast corner to improve safety for families with young children.  Many thanks to Steve Walden and the many other community members involved in this important project for all their time and effort.
